Over The Hill Cake Idea - Combover Cake

Executive Summary
This is a combover cake. I came up with the idea right after we bought the OverTheHill.com name. I think it would apply to almost any over the hill birthday party as a 40th birthday cake or 50th birthday cake, especially if your friend can't let go of his last few strands of hair.

Quick Facts
The combover cake requires:
  • One box of cake mix
  • About 2 hours of time
  • Less than $10

This is a combover cake. I came up with the idea right after we bought the OverTheHill.com name. I think it would apply to almost any over the hill birthday party as a 40th birthday cake or 50th birthday cake, especially if your friend can't let go of his last few strands of hair.

    This cake requires:
    • A Round Cake Pan
    • Cake Mix (eggs, oil, water, whatever the label calls for)
    • White Frosting (one jar)
    • Thin licorice (use black if you can, I could only find red)
    • Two brown M&M's
    • One marshmallow
    • One tube of black frosting
    • One jar of brown frosting coloring, or brown food coloring

Bake the cake. Let it cool and then decorate it like the picture. Here are some tips:
    • Lay out the entire design on a piece of paper beforehand.
    • When frosting the cake, keep a glass of hot water handy. Rinse your spatulat or knife in it before smoothing the frosting.
    • The ears and eyeballs should be at the same level.
    • The nose should be just about in the center of the circle.

To get the licorice in the combover to look particularly stringy I rolled it between my hand and the counter.
